Partnering with Offset Alliance

We collaborated with Offset Alliance to measure the most relevant carbon footprint caused by our retreat, and offset 150% of this measurement through Offset Alliance’s portfolio of global carbon reduction projects.

Land Travel

Attendees driving, taking taxis / ride shares and trains to the event. Did you know? Each gallon of gasoline burned adds about 25 pounds of CO2 to our atmosphere. DEFRA

Nightly rooms for attendees, and event venue space. Did you know? Across the U.S. the average nightly hotel stay adds about 70 pounds of CO2 to our atmosphere. HCMI

Air Travel

Attendees flying to the event. Did you know? The average seat on a round-trip flight from NYC to LAX adds about 2,350 pounds of CO2 to our atmosphere. ICAO

Our Retreat’s Measured Carbon Footprint

Total 11.73 mT CO2 and we offset 18 mT (3 | 3 | 12)

Since our first in-person event in 2022, our partnership with Offset Alliance has resulted in the measurement and offsetting of 126 mT of CO2.

To put this in perspective, it would take 2,083 trees TEN YEARS to draw down this much CO2 (US EPA). Calculations represented in metric tonnes (mT) of CO2, and based on published emission factors from US EPA, UK DEFRA, EIA, UN ICAO and HCMI.

How verified carbon offsets help lower global CO2 emissions

Projects around the world are being privately funded to lower CO2 levels in our atmosphere–like rebuilding forests, conserving wild lands and installing renewable energy to replace the burning of fossil fuels. When a project is developed to, and verified against rigorous, publicly available standards–it can generate and sell verified carbon offsets to fund ongoing operations and to help ensure the project’s continued success. Where we made verified CO2 reductions to offset our retreat’s carbon footprint

Florida

The Ascend Performance Phlogiston project uses proprietary technology to enhance voluntary control of N2O (nitrous oxide) emissions in Florida.
Why it’s important: N2O is a byproduct of manufacturing things like first responder uniforms and airbags for cars, and has a global warming potential 265X higher than carbon dioxide.
Standard: Climate Action Reserve UN SDGs: 9, 12, 13
Colorado

SPLT is an accredited land trust leveraging carbon finance to acquire and preserve shortgrass prairie ecosystems in Colorado.
Why it’s important: avoids land conversion to agriculture / commercial development and provides refuge for native wildlife including the swift fox, ferruginous hawk, burrowing owl, and mountain plover.
Standard: Climate Action Reserve UN SDGs: 13, 15
Colombia

Escuela de Minas is a run-of-river hydroelectric plant lowering the carbon intensity of increasing electricity production in southern Marinilla, Colombia.
Why it’s important: avoids the addition of fossil fuel intensive energy production, and increases the share of renewables as energy demand rises due to economic growth in the region.
Standard: Verra UN SDGs: 4, 7, 8, 13
