Going beyond CO2 redux–co-benefits of our Los Santos project in Costa Rica

Carbon offsetting that is lifting up communities

The best carbon offsets go beyond reducing global CO2 emissions–they help fund infrastructure and programs that lift up communities and make them more resilient.

If you live in a developed country, it’s easy to take conveniences like reliable electricity and internet access for granted. But much of the world still doesn’t have these basic conveniences.

This hinders gender equality, quality education and good health–just three of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which define the things society needs to address and improve in order for us to have a sustainable future. See the SDGs that Offset Alliance prioritizes.

Gender Equality SDG 5 In rural areas and in many cultures, the responsibility of domestic tasks is placed on women. Reliable electricity is foundational to helping gender equality happen, as it will greatly free up time women have to spend on tasks like firewood collection and cooking, and free up more time for education and entrepreneurship.

Quality Education SDG 4 The internet has become the backbone of global education, and the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted how disadvantaged rural communities are when it comes to access to information, training and education. Reliable electricity is foundational to reliable internet service being delivered to communities.

Good Health SDG 3 Cooking with wood and other combustible fuels has many proven negative health impacts, and in rural areas this typically affects women and children disproportionately. Reliable electricity helps eliminate the need to burn fossil fuels for cooking.

If you will leverage carbon offsets as part of your carbon reduction strategy for you business or yourself, it’s best to first understand a carbon offset project’s co-benefits to communities and biodiversity. Here’s more on Los Santos:
